Philippians 3:8-14

Someone once said that ‘In life it’s not about the journey, it’s about the destination!’

What will be the result of your life’s journey? Will there be joy when you are gone? Will there be sadness? Will your legacy be of great remembrance or will you be so quickly forgotten people will only say, ‘who cares?’ Your journey through this life is the same, yet different, as everyone else’s. You face pain, agony, frustration, tears, and fears. Your plans don’t always go like you dreamed; and your dreams are sometimes smashed against the rocks of reality. Sometimes your greatest joys, as in having a child, become your greatest loss as your child dies with childhood leukemia. Sometimes even the best of things in your own eyes, like the new car, the new house in the right neighborhood, and the greatest job in the world all disintegrate as the stock market falls, you lose your job, your spouse has an affair which leads to divorce, and the creditors want to put you in jail! Oh what a journey your life is! The real question is ‘Where is your journey taking you?’

If we seek to handle life’s journey on our own, then, beneath the service we become pawns on the chessboard of life moved at the whim of Satan. For he then is our master. He indirectly lures us into doing things that we might never believe we would ever do. Yet the great deceiver is seeking to destroy you. And his destruction of your life’s journey will result in life eternally spent with Satan in Hell itself. And know this, Satan isn’t choosey: he will take whoever has a great pride in themselves – they who believe they do not need assistance from anyone! The Bible states the truth in the book of Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction,  and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Satan would have you ‘live your life to fail’ and Jesus the Christ would have you to ‘live your life to prevail.’ One way needs only you and the other way needs you and Jesus! Which way do you choose?

Our Scripture today is Philippians 3:8-14

8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my LORD. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them but rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in Him(seek to gain Him in this life seeking to be found in Him in Heaven), not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from GOD that depends on faith – 10that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death(in other words, we die to our old sinful self and ways), 11that by an means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead(new life). 12Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead(the journey of life), 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of GOD in Christ Jesus(our resurrection with Him for all eternity).”

  1. There is great worth in knowing Jesus the Christ.
    1. Matthew 11:27 (ESV) 27 “All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
  2. For His name’s sake I live my life.
    1. Philippians 1:29 (ESV) 29 “For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,”
  3. I must seek to gain Christ and be found in Him.
    1. Mark 8:36 (ESV) 36” For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
  4. I come to GOD through faith in Jesus the Christ.
    1. John 5:24 (ESV) 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
  5. I must come to know Him and the power of His resurrection.
    1. 11may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death (in other words, we die to our old sinful self and ways),
  6. My goal is to attain the resurrection from the dead.
    1. 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead (new life).
  7. I must forget the past, live in present, and look forward to the future. (This is our life’s journey!)
    1. 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of GOD in Christ Jesus
  8. I must press on towards the goal.
    1. forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead (the journey of life)
  9. I must remember the goal is the upward call of GOD in Christ Jesus. (Called into heaven for all eternity!)
    1. 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of GOD in Christ Jesus
  10. If you can’t say this is your life’s journey, don’t wait, get on board the highway to heaven today though faith in Jesus the Christ who died on the cross of Calvary that you might have life eternal!
